Wherewithal Ventures

Thesis mapping, stage progression, and venture relationships

Venture Inventory as of 2026-03-29

Wherewithal Ventures is a design and incubation studio built on the thesis "You Are an API" — the business model inversion where users own the intelligence layer instead of being locked into black-box systems.

Each venture maps to one of four inversions (Value, Discovery, Trust, Infrastructure) and sits at a layer in the user model (Ambient, Reflective, Directed, Marketplace).

Stage Definitions

SIGNAL — Early hypothesis validation; proof of concept
FRAME — Problem well-defined; product shape emerging
BUILD — MVP building; validating core value prop
PROVE — Product-market fit evidence; scaling proof

Four Inversions & Layer Model

The Wherewithal thesis: "You Are an API" — the business model inversion where the user owns the intelligence layer instead of being locked in a black box.

Each venture demonstrates one of four inversions at a specific layer of the user model.

Inversions

# Inversion Definition Ventures
1 Value Extract your own taste/preference intelligence instead of using algorithmic black box Dodek, Gauge
2 Discovery Your data surfaces what serves you instead of what serves the platform Huntr
3 Trust Legibility earns trust instead of brand promises in a black box PAM
4 Infrastructure Own the stack instead of being locked into vendor infrastructure Totem, Latch

User Model Layers

Layer Definition Ventures
L1 Ambient Passive layer: system observes and surfaces context automatically Latch, Dodek, Gauge
L2 Reflective Active layer: system shows you what it knows about you, gaps, obligations PAM, Huntr
L3 Directed Intentional layer: user makes informed decisions with system's help Totem
L4 Marketplace North star: reverse app store where users control what data flows where (Conceptual)

Venture Relationships & Dependencies

PAM ↔ Totem

PAM is Totem's first connected data source and testbed for agent-to-data interactions. When Totem delegates credentials, PAM can share selective document access.

Totem ↔ Latch

Both are Infrastructure (Inversion #4). Totem owns identity/credential layer; Latch owns orchestration surface and safety harness for agent interactions.

Dodek ↔ Gauge

Both extract user intelligence (Inversion #1). Dodek: taste graph. Gauge: AI spend visibility. Can converge on a unified "user intelligence dashboard" layer.

All Ventures

All demonstrate the "You Are an API" thesis: extract from black box → user owns intelligence → user controls distribution.
